Im OK Your OK…Or Are We?

November 7, 2012

Usually, we are products of our environment and culture.  Even being counter cultural is in response to being affected by our interaction with our surroundings.  Our consciences are informed and molded by what we hear, see or experience in other ways.  Our views of right and wrong, good and evil, cool and uncool, and wise and unwise are often just the consensus, or usually our perception of the consensus, of those that we consider our peers or our comrades.  Having a bigger, smaller or different shaped box of ideas is usually met with ridicule or at least under the breath snickering.  We do not like to be judged, so we just kind of get along and stay quiet about certain things.  Some of this may be healthy for us and society.  Some is not.

When it comes to what is actually true, instead of just perceived truth, it can make a huge difference in our temporal and eternal existences.  No matter what we think is true about gravity, we will fall if we jump off of a cliff.  No matter what we think about running stop signs, we will still be ticketed if a law enforcement officer sees us ignore that simple four letter injunction.  No matter what we think about our eternal state, there is one judge that will decide our eternal reward, whether for our good or our detriment.

I think that it is safe to say that our consciences start out pretty blank.  When we learn the word “no,” we have begun the process of having our conscience informed.  It gets a bit tricky from here on out.  Different families, cultures and religions have different ideas about what is acceptable and what is not.  What if there are some things that are absolutely true that our conscience informers are unaware of or are in error about?  What if our view of the status quo is at odds with ultimate reality?  What if our moral teachers, sincere and well meaning though they be, have some things wrong?

How do we fix a broken or twisted conscience?  How can we ever overcome the powerful dictates of a faulty morality when we have been falsely programmed to know for certain that our view is right…when it really isn’t?  Are we doomed to ever and always not know the truth?  Why would we even ask these questions if there wasn’t some source that produced a bit of uncertainty in our minds?

We need failure.  We need opposition.  We need interaction with those that have a different view.  We need confrontation.  Our apple cart needs to be overturned on occasion.  But mostly we need humility to be open to the possibility that our way is not THE WAY.  If we are satisfied with the mixed flavor that we currently are having poured into our contaminated cup, we will not likely want to drink from the water of life, but if your thirsty for something more…

Revelation 22

11  He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12  And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
14  Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15  For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
16  I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
17  And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.  (KJV)

We have an invitation to drink freely of the water of life and to eat from the tree of life.  We also have a prerequisite to gain the right to do so.  There are those that love and make lies.  They will not be allowed into the city in which that tree and that spring are found.  What if our consciences are misinformed to the extent that we love lies and even make them?  What if we have been deceived and feel just fine about it?  Deception does that.  The deceived person never knows that he is deceived, or it would not be called deception, but rebellion.

Can I implore you to reconsider keeping Yahweh’s commandments.  Not to obtain salvation, but because you are saved.  Because your Father in Heaven want’s you to succeed and be great in Messiah’s kingdom.  Because it is the outworking of the two greatest commandments, namely to love Yahweh with everything you are and your fellow man as yourself.  Because no one will enter the New Jerusalem or partake of the tree of life without applying themselves to doing Yahweh’s commandments.  Because the apostles did.  Because our Messiah, Y’shua did and we are called to walk in His steps.

All the above things are spoken of in the New Testament.  Most are bypassed by modern Christianity.  Most of them are not known about by the people in the pew nor preached from the pulpit.  Your conscience may just need a little informing in this area because of this oversight.  I am sure that most Christians are well meaning, but good intentions only remain good if the person continues to pursue truth.  Stagnation in spiritual knowledge and action is not a virtue.

Consider this my attempt at confronting to you make your calling and election sure.  Consider me an apple cart dumper.  Consider me a foe, if you need to.  But whatever your do, do not consider yourself to be hungering and thirsting after righteousness if you blow this message off.

I am not promoting salvation by works.  I am promoting working out our own salvation with fear and trembling.  I am not advocating being under the law, but I am insisting that YHWH’s law cannot be continuously, purposely broken with impunity.  Please consider the following scriptures:

Matthew 5
17  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18  For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19  Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Ga 3:21  Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid…
Ro 3:31  Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
1Jo 3:4  Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
Ro 7:7  What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law…

Ro 6:1  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Ro 6:15  What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Ro 7:7  What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law…
12  Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13  Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid…
14  For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Ro 8:4  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit…
6  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

If you find it impossible to keep YHWH’s law or even if you simply do not want to, why are you not carnal?  When we walk in YHWH’s Spirit, we keep the law.  When we resist YHWH by disobedience to His law we are walking after the flesh.  Paul makes that quite clear.  Deception is tricky.  But we have been warned.

1 John 3
4  Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5  And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6  Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7  Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8  He that committeth sin is of the devil;

Jas 1:22  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23  For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24  For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Ro 2:13  For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

1 Co 3:11  For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12  Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13  Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
14  If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15  If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Re 12:17  And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Re 14:12  Here is the endurance of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Re 22:14  Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

It is faith in Messiah and keeping YHWH’s commandments that prove our endurance and loyalty.  Commandment keeping will come up large in the end.

1Jo 5:3  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
1Jo 2:3  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1Jo 2:4  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

And these are just a few.  Choose carefully who you let inform your conscience.  It can cost you dearly.  Are you OK?  Or did you just think that you were?

Shalom
